      Elderly patients

Cranial osteopathy is a form of osteopathy that has been around for many years, and is recognised as an effective method of treatment for a wide range of conditions in people of all ages from birth to old age.

It is a refined and subtle type of osteopathic treatment that uses very gentle manipulative pressure to encourage the release of stresses throughout the body.

The osteopath will feel a very subtle rhythmical shape change that is present in all body tissues. The skull is made up off 26 bones that are intricately joined in a way that the skull can actually change shape very slightly to accommodate this rhythmical involuntary motion.

Accumulation of stress, impact to the head or spine, illness or physical trauma can all have an effect on the movements of these bones and the surrounding soft tissues. The osteopath will detect this and can feel whether this is preventing a person from attaining an optimum state of health. The gentle, skilful application of cranial osteopathy can often bring significant improvement in returning a person back to health.

Babies and children
Because cranial osteopathy is very gentle, safe and effective, It can work especially well for babies and children.

When a child is born, the small movement that exists between the bones of the skull permits the baby's head to adapt to the forces of labour. However, if the birth is complicated either by being too fast or too slow, or if the need for forceps (or ventouse) occurs, the baby's head may not fully recover from the distortion. This may lead to subtle changes in function, resulting in a crying, irritable baby, with difficulties such as feeding problems, colic, wind and sleep disturbances.

Older children can also benefit from Cranial Osteopathy. As a child grows, the effect of retained moulding can lead to other problems such as recurrent chest and ear infections, sinus and dental problems, asthma and even behavioural problems and learning difficulties.

Pregnant Mothers
Osteopathy can also help the mother during and after her pregnancy. It can be beneficial in easing physical discomforts of pregnancy, preparing for the demands of labour and helps the mother recover after the birth. Common complaints are nausea, heartburn, breathing difficulties and various aches and pains.
